The basis of the new national curriculum for the nurturing and development of young Australians as informed responsible citizens, rests upon an agreed set of values determined at the Melbourne Declaration on Educational Goals for Young Australians in 2008.
Melbourne Declaration on Educational Goals for Young Australians
Partnerships between students, parents, carers and families, the broader community, ...engender support for the development and wellbeing of young people and their families and can provide opportunities for young Australians to connect with their communities, participate in civic life and develop a sense of responsible citizenship. (P.10)
Whilst JBRT has cross-curricula appeal across PDHPE, Life Skills and Family and Community Studies, it is within the personal development and pastoral curriculum where it has the most direct relevance. JBRT also has learning resource value for Distance Education and Home Schooling.

Texts provide the means for communication. Their forms and conventions have developed to help us communicate effectively with a variety of audiences for a range of purposes. Texts can be written, spoken or multimodal and in print or digital/online forms. Multimodal texts combine language with other systems for communicating such as print text, visual images, soundtrack and spoken word as in film or computer presentation media. Texts provide opportunities for important learning about aspects of human experience and about aesthetic value.
