Highway 35 Filmmakers' Bootcamp was an intensive 5-day workshop offering participants a hands-on introduction to filmmaking.
Supported by the Department of Transport, Energy and Infrastructure, Tatiara District Council, Country Arts SA and local Police and Ambulance services, two bootcamps were held in May 2009 - the first involved students from Keith Area School and the second was held at Lucindale Area School.
A team of four filmmakers from the Media Resource Centre in Adelaide travelled to the Limestone Coast to work closely with the students on the production of TV commercials (TVC's) and short documentaries on a road safety theme. Students worked in groups writing, preproducing, filming and editing their own productions during each bootcamp with the support and advice from the professional filmmakers.
An important and impactual element of this initiative was the content for the documentaries, this was gained from local residents and community groups volunteering their time and sharing their stories about how they have been affected by road crashes and are still living with these challenges each day.
The completed TVC's screened on regional television across South Australia and Western Victoria to raise awareness about some of the main causes of accidents on country roads.
The documentaires were screened to both the Keith and Lucindale communties where locals came out in numbers to see what great work the students had created.
Feedback from the functions was overwhelmingly positive including comments on the high quality and professionalism and emotionally moving content, again reinforcing the fact these groups of students have created material that will assist in saving lives on their roads.
More recently Keith Area School and Lucindale Area School's were awarded for this project at the State Area School conference for "Best Practice".
Highway 35 was a terrific opportunity for students to gain some filmmaking skills and actively participate in the process of making roads safer. I would strongly encourage other communities to undertake a similar project.
